ABOUT
Andy Downes is a contemporary artist based in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Known for his bold, textural approach, Andy uses energetic mark-making and thought-provoking colour palettes to create striking portraits and figurative works. His distinctive style has evolved over years of self-guided practice, shaped by countless hours in the studio and on location.
Andy’s original paintings and prints have been exhibited across Essex and London and are collected throughout Europe. His commitment to capturing character and emotion in his subjects makes his work both captivating and accessible.
Previously, Andy founded The Little Known Studio in Leigh-on-Sea—a self-funded gallery and working studio space. It served not only as a showcase for his own work but also as a platform for emerging local artists to exhibit and sell their art to the vibrant Leigh community. The space is now part of the Grainger Arts Row Complex in the heart of Southend.
In 2023, Andy expanded his practice into community-led initiatives, launching the Southend Portrait Artist Competition, The Southend Urban Open, and the Children’s Portrait Artist Weekend. He continues to champion creativity through live demonstrations for schools and art clubs.
